Adopt-a-Book Program 2025
What is this program?
Each year, on April 1st, the Military History Research Centre of the Canadian War Museum submits a list of desired titles to the Friends charity. These titles are intended to enhance the Centre’s research capabilities but fall outside its budget allocation. This initiative aims to secure funding or support for acquiring valuable resources that will aid in military history research, enabling the Centre to better serve researchers, historians, and the public interested in this field.
Why is this program important?
Since the program’s inception, over 1,220 titles, valued at more than $55,000, have been sponsored for the Military History Research Centre. This generosity has significantly enhanced the Centre’s international reputation, allowing Canadian and global researchers to access valuable resources through the Inter-library Loan Service. As a result, these efforts enable researchers to pursue their studies in military history, thereby contributing to a broader understanding of wars and their effects on societies. This initiative not only supports academic research but also enriches public knowledge and appreciation of historical military events and their societal impacts.
Why should you support this program?
- Knowing that you are helping to enhance the capabilities of the Military History Research Centre and its international reputation for excellence;
- Knowing that you have contributed positive and practical support through the Friends charity for the on-going work of the Canadian War Museum as a national treasure.
- Knowing that each adopted title has your name inserted on the inside cover, hence a permanent record of your generosity; and
- Knowing that, in addition to your name, you have the ability to recognize another individual or group – living or departed – in tribute, or in memoriam;

How can I support?
You can adopt a book or multiple books to honor a person you admire. Here’s how you can participate:
- Visit the Sponsor a Book page on the Friends of the Canadian War Museum’s website.
- Follow the provided steps to enter the required information.
- In the ‘message box,’ be sure to include ‘Adopt-a-Book’ along with the listed number(s) and title(s) you wish to sponsor.
- If you would like to make a tribute, there is an additional box where you can enter an ‘in memoriam’ or ‘dedication.’
This is a wonderful opportunity to recognize someone special while supporting the Military History Research Centre!
Adopt-a-Book Campaign 2025-2026
The books adopted during this campaign will play a crucial role in ensuring that the Military History Research Centre’s library remains the premier collection of Canadian military history titles globally. This year’s offering includes 57 books in both English and French, featuring the latest literature in the field while also addressing existing gaps in the library’s subject matter for a comprehensive overview of military history.
The selected titles cover a vast array of topics, such as:
- Geopolitics and strategy
- Military tactics
- Personal experiences, including women’s perspectives in war
- General and military history across different eras
- Economic weapons
- Wargaming
- Photography
The titles that the MHRC library aims to acquire are listed below. You may choose specific titles or allow the campaign coordinator to make selections on your behalf. If a title has already been adopted, an alternate title of equal value will be assigned.
Each adopted book will feature a bookplate inscribed with the sponsor’s name and any “In Memoriam” or “Dedication” message. This ensures that your contribution is commemorated and that you play a part in expanding the library’s valuable resources.
