Artifact W1-10: James Stoddart, 835505 Canadian Army

On January 29th, 1916 James joined the 146th Overseas Battalion and then transferred to the 4th Canadian Mounted Rifles. He sailed from Halifax on the SS Southland on September 25th, 1916. He was killed in action April 9th, 1917 at Vimy Ridge. His body was not recovered and is one of the thousands of young soldiers who might be the “Unknown Soldier” now entombed at the Canadian War Memorial in Ottawa.
He is listed on Page 333 of the First World War Book of Remembrance located on Parliament Hill.
After enlisting, James Stoddart sent a number of postcards showing life at ValCartier before being shipped overseas with the CEF.
