Published by the University of British Columbia Press with support from the Canadian War Museum, Boosters and Barkers examines how Canada paid for its involvement in the Great War, a topic that merits fresh attention.
It seeks, in an interdisciplinary manner, to explore how the government paid, while engaging Canadians in the unprecedented effort demanded by the war.
The author’s talk will introduce the audience to the book’s five parts: finance proper and the critical use of loans from the public, the campaigns that propelled these drives, comparable effort in Newfoundland, consensus and resistance, and the images, sounds, and literature of propaganda – the business of marketing.
